Buffalo is not an island unto itself, but on the contrary, is surrounded by many other centers of social activity, some nearer and others farther away. In any case, for one who looks hard enough and exerts some initiative, there is never an end to new and exciting things to do in the greater Buffalo area and surrounding region.
I've come up with a star-ranking system of sorts (stars denoted by '*'), to superficially summarize my overall impression of a given establishment. Five stars means it's outstanding, the best you'll find throughout the land; go there. Four means it's pretty good, definitely not a waste of time; excellent atmosphere. Three means it's okay, it has something distinguishing about it to make it worth checking into; certainly better than nothing. Two stars means it's there, it's not entirely repulsive, but you have to put exceptional effort into the experience to get something out of it. One star means it exists, and it would be acceptable if it were the last place on earth, but it's really more appropriate as a kind of training facility for the newly-initiated. Also, the symbol '+' represents half a star, to read as "and a half," to make more continuous the ranking spectrum.
Here is a choice of several regions to choose from that I've hand-picked for an optimum range of social/nightlife activities to choose from:
